That&#8217;s not wrong. But it&#8217;s not the full picture either.<\/p>\n<p>The EHIC is a useful card to have. The mistake is treating it as a replacement for travel insurance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What the EHIC Actually Covers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The EHIC gives you access to state-provided healthcare in EU and EEA countries, as well as Switzerland, on the same terms as residents of the country you&#8217;re visiting. If a local pays nothing for a GP visit, you pay nothing. If they pay a co-payment, so do you.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds reassuring \u2014 and in some situations, it genuinely helps. The EHIC won&#8217;t help you there.<\/p>\n<p>Medical repatriation \u2014 the process of being safely transferred back to your home country \u2014 can cost anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of euros, depending on your condition and location. None of that is covered by the EHIC.<\/p>\n<p><em>The EHIC is a useful supplement \u2014 not a substitute. Turkey is not an EU\/EEA member, so the EHIC does not apply there. You will need travel insurance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If I see a private doctor in an EU country, does the EHIC cover it? <\/strong>No. The EHIC only covers public hospitals and healthcare facilities.
